# Liverpool urged to re-sign Coutinho this summer

Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson has urged the Reds to bring Philippe Coutinho back to the club this summer.

The Brazilian has endured a wretched time of things at Barcelona, failing to meet the huge expectations of him.

Despite scoring a respectable 21 goals in 74 matches since joining in January 2018, his all-round performances have been lacking.

Coutinho may now be sold by Barcelona at the end of the season, especially after two poor displays against Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final.

> I would take him back in a heartbeat, but it would have to be now. You don’t want to leave it another 12 months, I think he still has the ability.

> He’s suffered at Barcelona. We’ve seen him playing out wide on the left, but he’s not Neymar.

> He likes to be in the middle where he can pull strings and is getting on the ball to hurt teams.

> He doesn’t do that and he’s not a left-winger and that’s where he’s playing at Barcelona; they don’t love him like Liverpool loved him.

In truth, it is hard to see Coutinho returning to Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp unlikely to be behind the idea of re-signing him.

It feels like a chapter in the Reds’ history that has been and gone, with the club likely to bring in other faces instead this summer.

A new attacking midfielder in the mould of Coutinho is expected to be a primary target this summer.
