# Liverpool’s Community Shield opponents confirmed

Liverpool now know that they will face Arsenal in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 29th.

Arsenal lifted the FA Cup after defeating Chelsea 2-1 on Saturday, thanks to a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, meaning they have booked their place in the curtain-raiser of English football against the Premier League champions.

Liverpool played City in the last season’s Community Shield, losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

Liverpool will be aiming to lift the Shield for a 16th time at the end of August, albeit as will Arsenal, both clubs having won the honour 15 times previously.

The two sides last met in the season opener back in 2002 when a goal from Gunners’ Brazilian midfielder Gilberto separated the two sides. Gerard Houllier was in charge of the Reds on that day and Sami Hyypia captained the side.

In the most recent Premier League meeting, a trip to Arsenal came in the champions post-celebration period and despite taking the lead at the Emirates, uncharacteristic mistakes from Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker gifted the Gunners two goals that were enough to see them run out 2-1 winners.

Jurgen Klopp will aim to be the first manager to lift the Community Shield for the club since Rafa Benitez back 2006 when the then FA Cup holders beat Chelsea 2-1 in Cardiff.

As Liverpool kick off what they hope will be another successful season in 2020/21, the Community Shield could act as a positive beginning. A trophy-laden 13 months has included none of the domestic cup competitions, something the German boss might be keen to put right this term.
