# Loris Karius’ loan spell at Union Berlin could be cancelled

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/23/liverpool-contact-sven-botman-agent-transfer-rumours/) goalkeeper [Loris Karius](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/10/liverpool-fans-fume-at-gareth-bales-needless-mocking-of-loris-karius/) could be sent back to the club after his loan spell at Union Berlin has failed to work out for all parties, according to the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9082169/Loris-Karius-return-Liverpool-January-playing-just-loan-Union-Berlin.html).

The German, who was one of [Jurgen Klopp’s first signings back in 2016](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/may/24/liverpool-sign-loris-karius-mainz-goalkeeper-simon-mignolet), has [not played competitively for the Reds](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/85864/verein/31) since his [infamous, error-strewn performance](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44268491) in the 2018 Champions League final.

On the back of that night in Kiev, Klopp delved back into the transfer market to [sign Alisson Becker from AS Roma](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11441825/liverpool-sign-alisson-from-roma-in-record-deal-for-a-goalkeeper) and the Reds haven’t looked back since.

That night proved to be a turning point in the career of Karius; since then the 27-year-old has [received death threats](https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/liverpool-goalkeeper-loris-karius-sent-death-threats-by-fans-after-howlers-during-champions-league-a3849211.html) over his Champions League final nightmare, experienced a [controversial time at Besiktas](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52495326) and has made [just one solitary appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/leistungsdaten/spieler/85864) at Union Berlin.

German news outlet [Kicker](https://www.kicker.de/loris-karius/spieler) claimed that Karius’ loan spell could be ‘cancelled’ after the goalkeeper [failed to make a single league outing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/leistungsdaten/spieler/85864) for the Berlin club since arriving in September.

Under contract with the [Premier League champions until 2023](https://socceronsunday.com/article/loris-karius-signs-new-5-year-contract/), Liverpool will have to find another solution for their much-maligned goalkeeper, or face the prospect of leaving their [previously highly-rated](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/news/Bundesliga/liverpool-loris-karius-made-in-bundesliga-with-mainz-klopp-tuchel-506856.jsp) outcast waste the next two years of his career.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Despite the [animosity of some Liverpool fans](https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/liverpool-goalkeeper-loris-karius-sent-death-threats-by-fans-after-howlers-during-champions-league-a3849211.html) towards the German stopper after that fateful night against Real Madrid, many Kopites may have hoped that his latest move and a [return to his homeland](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/loris-karius-5-things-on-union-berlin-s-liverpool-owned-goalkeeper-klopp-13019) would have spelt the end to what has been a nightmare two years for him.

However, it seems the career of a player who was once considered to be the [long-term Anfield number one](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jan/19/jurgen-klopp-loris-karius-liverpool-no1-goalkeeper#:~:text=2%20years%20old-,J%C3%BCrgen%20Klopp%20makes%20Karius%20Liverpool's%20No%201,%3A%20'It's%20time%20to%20deliver'&text=J%C3%BCrgen%20Klopp%20has%20told%20Loris,set%20for%20an%20extended%20run.) has gone downhill and shows no sign of righting itself.

There seems to be no future at the club for Karius, as the [emergence of Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1369942/Liverpool-news-Caoimhin-Kelleher-Champions-League-Alissn-latest-update) this season and the [excellence of Alisson](https://www.fifa.com/the-best-fifa-football-awards/news/the-55-most-voted-players-for-the-2020-fifa-fifpro-men-s-world-xi) means they are not for budging.
