# ‘Lost control’ – Daniel Sturridge pinpoints big Andoni Iraola blunder for Liverpool

**It was a tough night for Liverpool at Anfield as they were beaten 1-0 by Premier League champions Arsenal.**

Kai Havertz scored the solitary goal of the game in the first half, after which Mikel Arteta’s side defended with all their might to secure three priceless points away from home.

Ahead of kickoff, all eyes were on Trey Nyoni as he was handed his full Premier League debut by Andoni Iraola.

However, he was withdrawn in the second half for Dom Szoboszlai, who made his injury return for the club.

And Daniel Sturridge feels Liverpool lost momentum when the Hungarian replaced Nyoni at the heart of the midfield.

## Daniel Sturridge names Liverpool blunder

“Liverpool lost control when Trey Nyoni came off the field,” Sturridge said on Sky Sports after the final whistle.

“He was really good, passing the ball between the lines, controlling the tempo.

“You bring Szoboszlai on who’s a fantastic runner, we lost control in possession, out of possession he was positive, but I didn’t feel Liverpool controlled the ball as well without having Trey Nyoni on the field.”

> 📊 Trey Nyoni completed 53 of his 55 passes against Arsenal (96%), the highest completion rate by a Liverpool midfielder in this fixture since Fabinho in November 2021 (98%, minimum 50 attempted).\

Sturridge is absolutely bang on with his assessment. Szoboszlai has his strengths and has been one of Liverpool’s most consistent players since the start of last season, but the current set-up under Iraola is crying out for a player like Nyoni.

He overcame a nervy start to keep things ticking in the middle of the park and is better suited to a deeper role than Szoboszlai, whose long-range shooting ability and energy mean he is better off as a No.10.

Iraola made a few changes to inject some energy into the team, but Liverpool lost control of the game when the Hungarian came on for Nyoni.
