# Lucas keen on Inter

Reports coming out of Italy this morning suggest that Brazilian defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva is ready to switch Merseyside from Milan after seven and half years as a red.

After securing the services of Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri, Roberto Mancini has made Lucas Leiva his main priority and according to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Brazilian has already spoken with the former Manchester City Manager about a move taking place this month.

The link with the Nerazzurri is likely to cause stir among the Anfield crowd after a recent run of improved performances had suggested that Lucas had finally put the plague of knee injuries behind him.

It’s fair to say that Lucas Leiva has had somewhat of a rollercoaster relationship with the Anfield faithful since arriving in 2007. He arrived from Gremio as the captain of the U20 international side playing as a box to box midfielder and the fact that he was the youngster player ever to receive Bola de Ouro (player of the year) in the Brazilian League, there was definitely excitement surrounding his arrival.

After initially struggling to adapt to life in England and keep the high standards of his midfield partners Gerrard, Alonso and Mascherano, the Brazilians persistence meant he was becoming a fans favourite. Under Dalglish Lucas Leiva had become a key member of the squad but numerous knee injuries halted the midfielder’s career.

Since the return to full fitness Lucas has only been able to secure bit part player role under the current manager Brendan Rodgers. With no guarantees of returning to key member of the squad under Rodgers, now would be the perfect timing for Lucas to face a new experience and also use the move as once last chance at International football.

In recent windows clubs have been hesitant making approaches for Lucas Leiva, bearing in mind his injuries. So after his recent run of first team football, it could be the best time for both parties to look at the move, especially if Liverpool want to recoup as much money as possible out of the deal.

Liverpool are likely to want around £7m from Inter to make the move happen. The obvious worry for Liverpool fans is that this move would leave the red men without a natural holding midfielder. With Liverpool’s defensive frailties, this should be one position in where Rodgers should be looking to improve. It’s likely a deal will only be struck this month if a replacement could be found in time.
