# McManaman expresses doubts over Sancho joining Liverpool

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman has expressed doubts about Jadon Sancho’s potential summer move to Anfield.

The 19-year-old has shone for Borussia Dortmund since joining from Man City in 2017, scoring [27 goals and 33 assists](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/346300/History/Jadon-Sancho).

Sancho has been [linked](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2019/12/28/liverpools-interest-in-jadon-sancho-confirmed/) with Liverpool in the past, ahead of an expected [exit](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7682459/Jadon-Sancho-hands-major-boost-suitors-English-winger-wants-LEAVE-Borussia-Dortmund.html) from Dortmund this summer.

Speaking to *[horseracing,net](https://www.horseracing.net/cheltenham-festival/news/steve-mcmanaman-the-gold-cup-is-wide-open)*, McManaman outlined why he didn’t think the youngster joining the Reds would be a good decision:

> I think he’d prefer to go somewhere where he will start week-in and week-out. I don’t think there’s any problem with that.

> The other thing is the cost implications. How much is he going to cost?

> No doubt, he’s an extremely bright prospect, he’s doing really well in Dortmund, he plays regularly and he’s a star there.

> Whether Liverpool would go for him now is something that I don’t know and if he was available, he’d command big money and I presume that there’s a number of clubs that would go for him.

> Jadon could cost £60m/£75m and that’s a lot of money for somebody that young even though he looks a fantastic prospect.

> It’s a big outlay for a player and in all honesty, Liverpool’s young players are all doing well themselves and Jurgen Klopp seems to want to give them a go.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

I think Sancho would be a superb addition for Liverpool, but I also fully understand McManaman’s trepidation.

The England international has scored [12 goals and has registered the same number of assists](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/346300/History/Jadon-Sancho) this season, in just 18 Bundesliga appearances.

These are highly impressive figures for anyone, in my opinion, let alone a teenager still learning his trade, suggesting he would bring goals and assists to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The issue that Sancho likely wouldn’t be a regular starter for Liverpool is a clear stumbling block, however, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino currently leading the Reds’ line towards Premier League glory.
