# Journalist reveals Liverpool winger ‘was never available for transfer’ despite summer rumours

Liverpool have already gotten off to a great start to this season across all competitions.

The Reds are yet to lose so far this campaign and last night saw them [progress to the fourth round](https://www.skysports.com/football/norwich-city-vs-liverpool/report/457306) of the EFL Cup.

One takeaway from the game was the performance of Japanese forward Takumi Minamino.

Last season saw Minamino [leave the club in January](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/takumi-minamino/transfers/spieler/165793/transfer_id/3234059) on a six-month loan at Southampton.

Despite being linked with a move away this summer, the forward stayed and has proven it was the right decision.

However, following last nights win, [The Athletic’s James Pearce](https://theathletic.com/2834325/2021/09/21/minamino-display-shows-why-liverpool-were-not-prepared-to-give-up-on-him-this-summer/?source=emp_shared_article) revealed that the winger was never up for sale…

As cited by [Anfield Watch](https://twitter.com/AnfieldWatch/status/1440563946608480258) above, MInamino was never available for transfer this summer.

In fact, Jurgen Klopp was keen to keep hold of the 26-year-old, feeling that he would soon prove his worth.

One of the key aspects for this was ensuring he enjoyed a full pre-season at the club, which he did.

His time this summer and preperation with Klopp has clearly paid off with him enjoying a great performance.

Two goals during hte club’s [3-0 win](https://www.skysports.com/football/norwich-city-vs-liverpool/report/457306) proved he is fully capably of handling the pressure upfront for the Reds.

Although the likes of Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah provide more than enough firepower, Minamino will provide quality in depth.

For the season ahead, this will be incredibly important with Mané and Salah [set to depart in the winter](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/africa/58241452).

With the pair at the Africa Cup of Nations, the form of Minamino and DIvock Origi will be needed now more than ever.
