# Minamino will be allowed to play for Liverpool in the Champions League

It looks like Liverpool are close to completing the signing RB Leipzig’s [Takumi Minamino](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2019/12/12/liverpool-agree-deal-to-sign-takumi-minamino/) in the January transfer window.

The Austrian club have confirmed that they are in negotiations with the Reds about a move for the Japanese international and barring any last-minute hiccups, he should be moving to Liverpool when the transfer window opens.

So, the question then becomes, will the player who actually scored against Liverpool in the Champions League group stage be allowed to play for the Reds in the knockout phase of the competition, or is he cup-tied?

The answer is **YES**, Minamino **will** be allowed to play for the Reds in the knockout stages, provided that Liverpool choose to register him.

UEFA abolished their ‘cup-tied’ rule before the 2018/19 season and as such, Liverpool will be allowed to select Minamino in the competition.

The Reds are able to register three new players for the knockout stages of the Champions League and it seems highly likely that they would register the 24-year-old, so if the deal goes through, Minamino has the chance to become the first player to score both for and against the Reds in Europe in the same season.
