# Moment in time: Liverpool’s first Premier League match

As the proposed European Super League [disbands](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/56823501) as quickly as it came about, we’ve taken a trip back to remember[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/20/peter-crouch-rubbishes-calls-to-split-up-exhilarating-trio/)‘s first venture into the last major breakaway league.

Whilst not as [controversial](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56794673)and ultimately not as potentially damaging to the game as we know it, the introduction of the newly formed top-flight taking over from the old First Division was a huge sea change.

The inaugural campaign in 1992/93 saw the Reds make the trip to Nottingham Forest in what was the[first-ever game](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/08/09/first-ever-televised-premier-league-game-nottingham-forest-vs/) in the Premier League to be broadcast live by Sky TV.

A Liverpool [side](https://www.11v11.com/matches/nottingham-forest-v-liverpool-16-august-1992-20796/) containing the likes of Ian Rush, Michael Thomas and Steve Nichol, managed by Graeme Souness came up short on the day when Teddy Sheringham scored the only goal of the match.

Since then the Anfield club have been involved in every top-flight season, [winning the coveted title](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53183857) for the first time last season when [Jurgen Klopp](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/20/jamie-carragher-warns-fsg-of-the-impact-if-klopp-left-amid-european-super-league-news/) led the Reds to glory.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

After what has been a monumental and dramatic week for elite football, Liverpool and moreover the owners have [plenty of damage](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/super-league-questions-remain-unanswered-20425973) to repair.

This nostalgic trip down memory lane has hopefully helped you remember why you fell in love with the beautiful game in the first place – even if it was a defeat for the Reds.
