# Noel Whelan believes Antonio Rudiger would be a ‘real coup’ for Liverpool

Former Premier League striker Noel Whelan has suggested [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/11/01/virals-liverpool-considering-a-move-for-real-madrid-outcast-luka-jovic/) would be pulling off a ‘real coup’ by signing Antonio Rudiger.

The Chelsea defender is [reportedly](https://www.eurosport.co.uk/football/transfers/2021-2022/antonio-conte-prepares-blueprint-for-manchester-united-to-win-trophies-this-season-transfer-notebook_sto8602957/story.shtml) under consideration at Anfield as the German defender continues to negotiate a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

Further [reports](https://sportwitness.co.uk/chelsea-star-currently-talks-man-city-tottenham-difficult-stay-stamford-bridge/) have claimed the 28-year-old is now ‘likely’ to leave the European champions at the end of the season.

Speaking to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/pundit-liverpool-could-finalise-real-coup-after-rudiger-offer-twist/), Whelan claimed Jurgen Klopp’s side would benefit hugely from Rudiger’s capture.

> Wow, that would be just a real coup. To have Rudiger and Van Dijk in the same side, with Konate to come in. Wow, that would be a solid set of options. It would add even more steel at the back. We all know what they’ve already got upfront and in midfield. There are not many positions in which you would say they need an extra player. But Rudiger would be some signing and give Liverpool two centre-halves that anyone would fear.

Despite remaining unbeaten in all competitions following a 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion over the weekend, Liverpool have [conceded eight league goals](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) this season – more than Chelsea and Manchester City.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Although the likes of [Mohamed Salah](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/11/01/virals-liverpool-interested-in-sporting-cp-star-pedro-goncalves/), Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have taken many of the plaudits in recent seasons, much of the success under Klopp has come via defensive solidity.

That solidity hasn’t necessarily [deserted the Reds](https://www.skysports.com/liverpool-results) altogether, however, there are now question marks emerging.

Albeit perhaps at the expense of Nat Phillips, signing Rudiger would [sure up the options yet further](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) and the German should be a hugely viable option on a free transfer next summer.

Playing alongside Virgil van Dijk with Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez waiitng in the wings is frightening strength in depth.

Valued at £31.5million and soon to be out of contract ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/antonio-rudiger/marktwertverlauf/spieler/86202)), Liverpool should be keeping a close eye on the situation.
