# Ojo debuts for Wigan

It seems Deadline Day was somewhat boring for most football fans last Monday, but luckily Wigan were rather busy, pulling off three signings – which included Ojo.

I like to think of myself as rather studious in football matters, but I must admit, I had never heard of this lad, but it was intriguing to see the hype which surrounded him from Liverpool fans. I work in a pub, and it wasn’t long on Monday before a whole host had told me that signing him was a real coup and he had something to offer us this season, despite his tender age.

Ojo started on the bench for the visit of table toppers Bournemouth, who despite finding themselves in a contest for the opening thirty minutes, were 3-0 up and cruising on the hour mark.

Malky Mackay took action, and introduced Ojo on 59 mins in place of Chris Herd, another of our January loan signings, to play on the right hand side of midfield.

The first thing that caught your eye as he came on was the size of this lad. He’s seventeen years old, but is big, strong and has an abundance of pace.

Latics scored almost immediately after the substitution, though Ojo wasn’t involved; McClean teeing up Clarke for a close range header to reduce dividends.

Bournemouth were cruising beforehand, and the goal reignited a fading game, with the visitors rattled until the close of the contest – something Ojo certainly played a part in.

He looked more than comfortable in possession, considering this was his first professional appearance, and was causing trouble within two minutes of coming on, when he passed three players with his first touch and soon after played an excellent ball to release Cowie on the right.

As you’d expect with any young player, he seems keen, but alongside this, he’s immensely strong and skilled on the ball, and there were times where he was able to pass players as if they weren’t there.

His introduction was very much an explosion, and I felt most of his impact was made within ten minutes of coming on, but it was very promising stuff considering we were down and out before the goal.

It was enough to earn him the accolade of Wigan’s man of the match, despite being on for just 30 minutes. I personally would have given it to Leon Clarke, but he certainly made an impression.

It was very much a cameo appearance, and it will be interesting to see how he copes when given his first start, but he’s very exciting and can certainly offer us something going forward.

If he is able to cause problems against a very good Bournemouth side on his debut though it’s very promising stuff, and this lad is certainly going places.
