# Old Firm duo lead the race for Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/14/fans-bewildered-fabrizio-romano-confirms-sokratis-offer/) striker [Taiwo Awoniyi](https://readceltic.com/2021/01/14/celtic-interested-in-liverpool-striker-taiwo-awoniyi/) is being pursued for a permanent move this month, according to a report from [90min](https://www.90min.com/posts/celtic-rangers-lead-chase-liverpool-striker-taiwo-awoniyi).

The 23-year-old is currently on loan at Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin but could soon be in line for a permanent move back in the UK as [Scottish Premiership giants](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/705188-celtic-rangers-old-firm-the-most-heated-rivalry-in-world-football) Celtic and Rangers lead the race for his signature ([90min](https://www.90min.com/posts/celtic-rangers-lead-chase-liverpool-striker-taiwo-awoniyi)).

The report claimed that the Old Firm rivals are among a host of clubs interested in the striker, with a £5m-plus fee mooted as a likely asking price.

After making a strong start to the season scoring [five top-flight goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/taiwo-awoniyi/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/295313/saison/2020/wettbewerb/L1/verein/89), Awoniyi could possibly join Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard at Rangers as he looks to further boost his side’s [crusade towards](https://www.skysports.com/scottish-premier-table) the Scottish title.

The 23-year-old was signed by the [Reds back in 2015](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/aug/31/liverpool-nigeria-taiwo-awoniyi-frankfurt) but [work permit problems](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47776255) have caused issues around getting him even close to [Jurgen Klopp](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/13/liverpool-want-xherdan-shaqiri-to-face-man-united-after-training-brilliance/)‘s first team plans.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

It seems, unfortunately, that Awoniyi’s [Liverpool dream](https://firsttimefinish.co.uk/2021/01/12/story-taiwo-awoniyi-nigerian-liverpools-doorstep/) is unlikely to become a reality anytime soon.

When he signed, there could have been [high hopes](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/media-watch/192950-nigeria-prospect-set-to-sign) that he would soon become a [major part](https://www.goal.com/en-ie/news/3908/main/2015/08/31/14926612/official-liverpool-sign-nigerian-prospect-awoniyi) of the Anfield setup, but the [ongoing work permit issues](https://www.90min.com/th/posts/6336000-taiwo-awoniyi-opens-up-on-work-permit-issues-which-have-curtailed-his-liverpool-career) and the Reds being in a far better place now than when he arrived means that his chance will likely never come.

After signing for £990,000 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/taiwo-awoniyi/transfers/spieler/295313)) and having had [numerous loan spells](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/taiwo-awoniyi/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/295313) to enhance his development, a fee upwards of £5m would at least see the club pocket a healthy profit.
