# Opinion: Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold was star performer in UCL clash

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/03/08/pundit-urges-liverpool-to-make-cheeky-offer-for-gini-wijnaldum/) qualified for the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals despite tasting defeat at the hands of Inter Milan.

The Reds were beaten for the first time in [12 matches](https://www.skysports.com/liverpool-results) across all competitions as [Lautaro Martinez](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/03/04/virals-liverpool-handed-boost-in-pursuit-of-inter-milan-ace-lautaro-martinez/) netted a 20 yard screamer beyond Alisson in the second half.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side made it through to the last eight and will now wait to discover their opponents in the [draw](https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/draws/2022/2001310/) at 11am GMT on Friday, March 18.

Whilst this was a case of job done for the Reds, there were a handful of [top performances](https://www.sofascore.com/liverpool-inter/UsXdb) on a difficult night in front of an expectant Anfield.

Marauding right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced to curtail some [attacking ambition](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/12470764/trent-alexander-arnold-is-the-premier-leagues-most-creative-player-due-to-a-positional-shift-at-liverpool-this-season) and instead keep a watchful eye on Ivan Perisic.

The 23-year-old was the pick of those on show with an [8.10 Sofascore rating](https://www.sofascore.com/liverpool-inter/UsXdb) for a display containing two clearances, two tackles, five key passes and one big chance created.

Here’s how we rated the Reds…

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

**XI**: Alisson 7; Trent Alexander-Arnold 9, Joel Matip 7, Virgil van Dijk 7, Andy Robertson 7; Fabinho 7, Thiago 6, Curtis Jones 6; Mohamed Salah 7, Sadio Mane 6, Diogo Jota 6.

**Subs**: Jordan Henderson 7, Naby Keita 7, Luis Diaz NA.

Whilst this was a relatively [solid defensive display](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10591927/Liverpool-0-1-Inter-Milan-Sanchez-red-card-prevents-visitors-sealing-Champions-League-comeback.html) across the board, Alexander-Arnold was well and truly the standout.

In an attacking sense, there were big chances made and squandered – particularly by Mohamed Salah, however, the Egyptian was constantly trying to make things happen and [got some joy late on](https://www.bt.com/sport/watch/video/clips/2022/march/highlights-liverpool-0-1-inter-milan-agg-2-1) dribbling beyond Alessandro Bastoni.
