# OTD: Liverpool signed Sadio Mane from Southampton

On this day (June 28) in 2016, [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/28/virals-liverpool-definitely-interested-in-kingsley-coman/) signed winger [Sadio Mane](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/27/ian-wright-mane-criticism/) from Southampton.

The Reds landed the 29-year-old Senegalese flyer in a deal worth £34million ([BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36642523)) after impressing in the Premier League on the south coast.

Mane arrived at Anfield as the [third summer signing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/transfers/verein/31/saison_id/2016) after much-maligned German goalkeeper Loris Karius and Cameroon defender Joel Matip had joined Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The likeable star wasted little time in endearing himself to Kopites when making a stunning start to his Reds career, netting a [solo goal on debut](https://www.fotmob.com/news/1b4lwsnej7j0h1fo66gjjh03y3/mane-shines-for-klopp's-liverpool-on-debut) in a 4-3 win against Arsenal.

Since that moment Mane has rarely looked back, scoring [97 goals and registering another 43 assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sadio-mane/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/200512) in 218 outings for the club.

Named African Footballer of the Year in 2019, the [75-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sadio-mane/nationalmannschaft/spieler/200512/verein_id/3499) ace has been a catalyst for Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Club Cup [trophy success](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sadio-mane/erfolge/spieler/200512) under Klopp.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Five years of Mane – what a joyous time.

Albeit coming off the back of a relatively [disappointing campaign](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sadio-mane/leistungsdaten/spieler/200512) by his own high standards, the [£76.5million valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sadio-mane/marktwertverlauf/spieler/200512) Red is still a hugely vital part of the side.

Hopefully [refreshed from a small break](https://www.pulse.ng/sports/football/sadio-mane-builds-hospital-in-his-village-in-senegal/3dhgqg2) this summer, Mane can come back fit and firing on all cylinders next term.
