# OTD: Titi Camara nets emotional winner against West Ham

On this day (October 27) in 1999, [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/10/27/virals-bayern-munich-considering-sale-of-liverpool-target-kingsley-coman/) forward Titi Camara netted an emotional winner as the Reds beat [West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/10/27/anton-ferdinand-urges-fantastic-declan-rice-to-stay-at-west-ham/) 1-0 at Anfield.

The hosts were without the lethal strike partnership of [Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/47459-player-duels-robbie-fowler-vs-michael-owen) as the late Gerard Houllier’s side overcame the resilient Hammers.

On what was a poignant evening for the Guinean ace, Camara capitalised on a mistake from a young Rio Ferdinand following a Rigobert Song cross to [nod home the only goal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNPk6Z6pH5A) of the match.

Camara was mourning the loss of his father, who had died earlier that day. Speaking after the match, Houllier paid [‘special tribute’](https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Football%3A+Tearful+Titi+hit+winner+for+dad%3B+LIVERPOOL+1+WEST+HAM+0.-a060362733) to what the then 26-year-old had played though.

On the night Liverpool’s teamsheet boasted such names as Patrik Berger, Erik Meijer and Sander Westerveld whilst Jamie Carragher played 90 minutes as a young [Steven Gerrard watched on](https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sport/football/fa_carling_premiership/489727.stm) from the bench.

Now retired, the [38-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/titi-camara/nationalmannschaft/spieler/106847/verein_id/3856) Guinean icon scored [10 times in 37 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/titi-camara/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/106847) for the Reds before ironically moving to West Ham in December 2000.

Stunning strength of character from Camara to even play, let alone score the winner after such a traumatic life event.
