# ‘Painful’ – Liverpool midfielder opens up on contract extension snub

**Liverpool are slowly coming into their own under Andoni Iraola, with a handful of their experienced players showing signs of returning to their best.**

And Alexis Mac Allister is one of the biggest examples of this after his strong start to life under the Spaniard.

The Argentine endured a tough season under Arne Slot last time out, which led to speculation surrounding his future.

Liverpool haven’t offered him a new deal yet, though, with his current contract set to expire in 2028.

And now, Mac Allister admits things could change in the coming months while also acknowledging that he felt hurt by the contract snub.

## Alexis Mac Allister opens up on Liverpool future

“We are in a situation where I have a year and a half left on my contract,” said Mac Allister via Gaston Edul’s YouTube channel.

“Last season it was conveyed to me that the club’s idea was not to renew my contract, at least for now. And, well, obviously it was a painful situation.

“I still had time or still have time left at this club, which is what I want most, to continue here.

“The reality is that the manager has changed, the sporting director has changed, and new investors are coming into the club. So I think today I am in a position where anything can happen, and well, we will see in the future. I am happy here.

“I know I still have time left at the club, which is what I want the most. I don’t judge the decision they made, I just take my emotions and we move forward. Everything can change before I become a free agent.”

Mac Allister has been Liverpool’s best midfielder by some distance this season. To be fair to him, after winning the Premier League title, the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Dom Szoboszlai were handed new deals, while he was snubbed.

As an experienced Premier League pro and a World Cup winner with Argentina, that would have been hard to digest, but he continues to conduct himself with utmost dignity and class.

And if he carries on in the same vein, it remains likely Liverpool will offer him a new deal at some point before the current campaign ends, which will be the best solution for all parties involved.
