# Paul Merson predicts where Liverpool will finish in the 2026-27 Premier League table

**Liverpool will play their first game of the new Premier League season today as they travel to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United.**

The Reds are preparing for their first competitive game under Andoni Iraola after the Spaniard replaced Arne Slot at the helm.

It’s been a summer of change at Anfield, with a lot of key players leaving and three new signings coming in.

Not a lot of pundits have fancied Liverpool to be up there with the best teams in the Premier League this season.

But the Anfield faithful won’t be too unhappy with Paul Merson’s prediction.

## Paul Merson says Liverpool will finish second

Arsenal head into the season as overwhelming favourites and have strengthened their squad this summer.

Mikel Arteta’s side look well-positioned to go back-to-back in the Premier League as teams around them don’t look as convincing.

And Merson believes Liverpool will finish second behind the Gunners this season, adding that he doesn’t know if they’ll be consistent enough to mount a serious title challenge.

He wrote on [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11661/13574632/paul-mersons-premier-league-season-preview-who-wins-title-and-finishes-in-top-five-and-who-are-relegation-contenders): “Liverpool just need to be consistent if they are to challenge Arsenal. Last season was so inconsistent from them.

“I look at their squad and I don’t see them having the same depth as Arsenal. Liverpool’s players would have to stay fit for them to have any chance of the title – the key players would have to play 36 or 37 games in the season.”

Honestly, if the Reds adopt an attractive brand of football and get a second-place finish this season, not too many fans will be unhappy with that.
