# Phil Thompson believes Steven Gerrard could be Jurgen Klopp’s successor

Former [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/04/liverpool-fans-are-delighted-reds-didnt-sign-timo-werner-after-hilarious-moment/) player and assistant manager Phil Thompson has claimed that [Steven Gerrard](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/08/liverpool-fans-remember-gerrards-goal-against-olympiakos-on-anniversary/) could be the man to succeed [Jurgen Klopp](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/04/jurgen-klopp-hints-that-liverpool-could-sign-players-in-january/)at Anfield.

Thompson told the [From the Horse’s Mouth](https://audioboom.com/posts/7763517-phil-thompson-reveals-what-happened-when-liverpool-tried-to-sign-cristiano-ronaldo-and-john-terry) podcast that his [fellow club legend](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/history/past-players/phil-thompson) and former player under his stewardship could add to his legacy on Merseyside by returning as manager.

The 66-year-old said: ”Graeme (Souness) got his first managerial job at Rangers and then get Liverpool off the back of it, so I would think Steven’s got a fair chance of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. He’s obviously the one that comes to mind when it comes to the next Liverpool manager.”

Gerrard, a Red of [504 Premier League appearances](https://www.premierleague.com/players/1575/Steven-Gerrard/stats) before his departure in 2015, is in the process of ending Celtic’s stranglehold north of the border as his Rangers side sit [19 points clear](https://www.skysports.com/scottish-premier-table) at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Nobody should be in a rush to shoehorn the former captain into the hot-seat, nor kick Klopp out of it for that matter.

However, it’s hard to ignore the audition the former Reds midfielder is currently enjoying in Glasgow. Having [left the Anfield coaching staff](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/may/04/steven-gerrard-appointed-as-new-manager-of-rangers) for his first role as a senior level manager, the apparent heir to the Anfield throne is doing his chances no harm thus far.

Stopping Celtic’s pursuit of [10 titles in a row](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53395307) would undoubtedly be a huge tick in the box for the Scouser, who almost certainly [dreams of the day he returns](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/liverpool-return-gerrard-leave-rangers/psm1l12j9hai1fkvz7bcrxouz) to Liverpool, albeit a few years off yet.
