# Phil Thompson hopes Liverpool are ‘asking questions’ in transfer window

Former [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/12/27/virals-liverpool-still-interested-in-attacking-premier-league-duo/) assistant manager Phil Thompson has been discussing the potential future transfer plans at Anfield.

Despite [rarely spending large sums](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-net-spend-klopp-fsg-21458992) in recent years under FSG without prior big-money sales, the Reds continue to be linked with sensational moves for the world’s hottest talent.

Borussia Dortmund duo Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham have been [touted](https://www.marca.com/en/football/liverpool/2021/12/08/61b07c95e2704eb1178b4572.html) as possible targets, albeit likely to cost in excess of £150million combined.

Speaking to [The Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1538231/Liverpool-transfer-news-Phil-Thompson-two-signings-FSG), Thompson, who also represented the club on [477 occasions](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/Profile/428), has called for Liverpool to at least be in the conversation for star names.

> I’d like to think our hat is going to be in the ring for some of the big players that are going to be about. Haaland is one, even Bellingham, who I think is going to be a star. These players, I just want us to be asking questions, we need to be in there, and hopefully we are saving our money for a big one.

The 67-year-old also suggested that Jurgen Klopp may look to bolster the [central midfield options](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) in the near future having struggled with availability earlier in the campaign.

At present, the Reds are fighting on all four fronts as the new year approaches with a place in the [Carabao Cup semi-final](https://www.efl.com/carabao-cup/) and UEFA Champions League knockout phase already booked for 2022.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Whilst captures such as Halland or Bellingham would be [sensational](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/erling-haaland-jude-bellingham-crazy-b955634.html) pieces of business, without a big sale it seems nigh on impossible the club would pull off such deals.

Instead, it’s a far more realistic prospect that the club would [unearth a lesser-known](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-michael-edwards-22168609) and undoubtedly less expensive alternative option to strengthen the ranks at Anfield.

Whoever arrives into Jurgen Klopp’s squad would stand every chance of [becoming a hit](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/liverpool-dont-buy-superstars-they-make-them-carragher-hails/1hkvqoax91sak1txpvufxwh9ld) as the previous captures of Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are testaments to.
