# Pundit claims Liverpool have Mohamed Salah ‘contingency’ lined up

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has claimed that [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/02/20/opinion-absolutely-fantastic-liverpool-ace-starred-vs-norwich-city/) are lining up a ‘contingency’ should [Mohamed Salah](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/01/11/fans-critical-of-tactics-as-egypt-use-mohamed-salah-like-crouch/) not sign a new contract.

The Reds have been [heavily linked](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/raphinha-jarrod-bowen-liverpool-breaking-23161604) with West Ham ace Jarrod Bowen and Leeds United right-winger Raphinha in recent months.

This speculation has come amidst a backdrop of [protracted negotiations](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/12513519/mohamed-salah-liverpool-forward-says-he-is-not-asking-for-crazy-stuff-as-contract-talks-drag-on#:~:text=Mohamed%20Salah%20says%20he%20is,wants%20to%20stay%20at%20Liverpool.) with Salah as the club attempts to tie Salah down beyond 2023.

Speaking to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/mohamed-salah-pundit-fears-liverpool-star-contract-talks-stalling-after-echo-update/), Robinson suggested that Liverpool are only looking at alternatives as a worst-case scenario.

> If Liverpool are still interested in Raphinha and Bowen then I don’t think negotiations are going well with Salah. I could only see Liverpool signing one of those two players if they were to lose Salah. Let’s be honest, neither of those two players are as good as Salah. I cannot see why Jurgen Klopp would buy another left-footed winger if Salah was going to sign a new deal. That wouldn’t make much sense to me. I think those two are seen more as a contingency plan.

So far this season Salah tops the [Premier League scoring charts](https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/goals) with 17 goals whilst Bowen and Raphinha have eight and nine respectively.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Previously it had seemed unlikely that the Reds would sanction a new deal for the [£90million valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mohamed-salah/marktwertverlauf/spieler/148455) Egyptian and sign positional competition.

However, following the arrival of Luis Diaz, Jurgen Klopp now has a [plethora of attacking options](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) including Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino, Roberto Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Diaz himself.

With the [futures of Oxlade-Chamberlain](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/oxlade-chamberlain-liverpool-klopp-opportunities-25358283), Origi and Minamino at least up in the air this summer, there is no reason why Liverpool couldn’t keep Salah and sign yet more quality forwards.
