# Pundit claims Liverpool should sign Sergio Aguero

Former Sunderland forward Stephen Elliott believes [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/02/virals-liverpool-willing-to-splash-cash-on-jadon-sancho/) should make an attempt to sign Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero this summer.

The Argentine is [set to leave the Etihad](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/breaking-sergio-aguero-man-city-20282563) at the end of the season, bringing an end to a decade long stay in Manchester.

Reds boss [Jurgen Klopp](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/26/james-pearce-new-striker/) could be in the market for a recognised striker after watching his forwards [fail to find the net](https://twitter.com/JamesPearceLFC/status/1386589720457760769?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1386589720457760769%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Freadliverpoolfc.com%2F2021%2F04%2F26%2Fjames-pearce-new-striker%2F) with the regularity shown in previous seasons.

That wastefulness, combined with key injuries to important players has seen [Liverpool fail to defend](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) the Premier League title – potentially handing the league to City this afternoon with a victory over arch-rivals Manchester United.

Elliott, who played [17 times](https://www.premierleague.com/players/2512/Stephen-Elliott/stats) in the top-flight, told [Off The Ball](https://www.otbsports.com/soccer/if-i-am-the-liverpool-manager-i-am-signing-aguero-stephen-elliott-1188606) following City’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace that the 32-year-old would be the ideal man for the Anfield role.

> If I am the Liverpool manager, I am signing him (Aguero) 100%. I watched him today and he still looks hungry in and around the goal. I think Aguero could be a massive signing. Whether he would come and sign for a rival of City, I am not sure. It would be a gigantic signing for Liverpool. I think he would lift the place.

Aguero has been a lesser-seen star at the champions-elect this season, scoring just [four goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-aguero/leistungsdaten/spieler/26399) in 16 appearances, having previously been an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s plans.

Capped a remarkable [97 times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-aguero/nationalmannschaft/spieler/26399/verein_id/3437) by Argentina, there’s little doubting the prolific strikers’ abilities, however, failing to score at Anfield in [15 visits](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-aguero/bilanzdetails/spieler/26399/gegner/31) across spells with City and Atletico Madrid – Kopites may be reticent to see the frontman in Red.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Signing Aguero for free from Liverpool’s [main rivals](https://talksport.com/football/802904/man-city-liverpool-manchester-united-rivalry-trevor-sinclair/) over recent years would undoubtedly be an earth-shattering statement.

Whether or not the Argentine is the [type of player](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/14260/Show/Sergio-Ag%C3%BCero) suited to Klopp’s system would have to be in question.

But, in terms of pure goalscoring instincts and prowess, the experienced ace would top the bill in the [squad](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team).
