# Andy Robertson reveals selfish mindset over Virgil van Dijk’s decision to sit out Euro 2020

At the start of the season Liverpool were dealt with a [crushing injury blow](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/verletzungen/spieler/139208) that had a real knock on affect.

Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk found himself on the end of a [nasty challenge](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54489179) from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The challenge led to an [ACL injury](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/verletzungen/spieler/139208) for Van Dijk, who spent majority of last season in rehab.

However, his return from injury is near to completion, but the defender was left with an agonising decision.

Go to Euro 2020 with Netherland’s, or stay at Liverpool to continue the last stages of his recovery.

Luckily for Reds fans, [he chose to do the latter](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/virgil-van-dijk-euro-2020-liverpool-injury-news-b1846162.html).

Something that Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson seemed more than thankful about.

Speaking to the [Scottish Herald](https://www.heraldscotland.com/), via [Anfield Watch](https://twitter.com/AnfieldWatch/status/1399851731291365378), Robertson revealed he would selfishly like the Dutchman to be fully fit for next season…

It is understandable to see why Robertson would have this mindset over the situation.

He simply wants the Reds to ensure they have a fully fit squad for the next campaign and Van Dijk is a huge part of that.

His impact and presence at the back has helped to transform the club’s defence over the last few years.

Losing him any longer would be catastrophic and him risking that at the Euro’s could be dangerous.

Thankfully, Van DIjk made the executive decision himself, so let’s hope it was a worth while action to take.
