# Liverpool Player Ratings: Southampton (A)

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/04/phil-thompson-believes-steven-gerrard-could-be-jurgen-klopps-successor/) were once again disappointing on the road as they succumbed to a [defeat at St Mary’s](https://www.theguardian.com/football/live/2021/jan/04/southampton-v-liverpool-premier-league-live) at the hands of [Southampton](https://readsouthampton.com/2021/01/04/saints-fans-alan-pace-burnley-criticism-academy/) last night.

The Reds were behind in the opening exchanges after a nothing free-kick saw former Kop favourite [Danny Ings lob the ball over Alisson](https://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/saints-add-to-liverpool-woes/188061) after an out-of-sorts Trent Alexander-Arnold failed to clear his lines.

After a first half in which Jurgen Klopp’s side looked [devoid of ideas](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55463017) and any intensity to get back into proceedings, the second half did bring about an improvement. However, Southampton were resilient and restricted Klopp’s side at every turn – the Reds first shot on target remarkably [came in the 73rd minute](https://www.skysports.com/football/soton-vs-liverpool/live/429004) through Sadio Mane.

Despite their efforts, Liverpool were too often found wanting and, when [two appeals for penalties](https://www.skysports.com/football/soton-vs-liverpool/live/429004) went begging, it became apparent it wasn’t going to be the champions’ night.

Regardless of any hardship, this was [another poor showing from the Reds](https://www.planetfootball.com/quick-reads/comparing-liverpools-home-and-away-record-in-the-premier-league-in-20-21/) as their quest to defend the [Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) title now looks in serious jeopardy.
