# Stoke Chairman: 6-1 thumping means nothing

Stoke City Chairman Peter Coates has played down the importance of the Potters’ thrashing of Liverpool in May after it was announced that his side will face the Reds at home on the opening day of next season.

Liverpool are set to travel to the Britannia Stadium just 76 days after a humiliating 6-1 defeat there on the final day of last season.

It was thought that the Reds’ capitulation in May would cost Brendan Rodgers his job, but the Ulsterman remains in charge and will make the trip to the Britannia in early August.

When asked about the fixture, Coates told the *Stoke Sentinel*:

*“Yes, it’s quite a coincidence how the fixture has come out.*

*“It doesn’t make any difference. Last season’s game doesn’t mean anything now, it’s the next one that means a lot.*

*“It is an interesting quirk, but I’m very philosophical about when you play anybody. My long experience tells me it doesn’t make a damned bit of difference, it’s all about how you play on the day and what bit of luck you get.”*
