# Sunderland turn down chance to loan Sakho

Sunderland have rejected the chance to sign Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho on loan, according to Simon Jones of the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3754317/Sunderland-reject-loan-deal-Liverpool-defender-Mamadou-Sakho.html).

News broke yesterday evening suggesting that Jurgen Klopp was eager to send the French international out on loan in a bid to get him back in football shape and playing regularly each week.

The Reds have signed Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip this summer, both of whom are fit and ready to play for Klopp’s side.

At the end of the last season, Sakho was involved in a performing enhancing drugs saga which saw him suspended from football activity, and although the punishment was later overturned, it did cost him his place in France’s Euro 2016 squad.

Also, during pre-season the defender was sent home from the tour of America after Klopp thought he was acting unprofessionally.

Sunderland have been struggling at the back in recent years but David Moyes has made a bid to rectify that by bringing in Donald Love and Paddy McNair from [Manchester United](https://readmanutd.com/) and Papy Djilobodji from [Chelsea](https://readchelsea.com/), while a deal to sign Javier Maquillo from [Atletico Madrid](https://readlaliga.com/) on loan is also nearing completion.

A player of Sakho’s quality and experience would’ve been a great addition to the squad this summer but Moyes believes that Djilobodji will occupy the left centre-back role Sakho plays in, deeming Sakho’s arrival unnecessary
