# Tony Adams suggests Arsenal should’ve signed ‘wonderful’ Joe Gomez

Legendary Arsenal central defender Tony Adams has questioned why the North London club didn’t sign [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/03/01/alisson-and-curtis-jones-share-heartwarming-twitter-exchange/) star [Joe Gomez](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/02/19/virgil-an-dijk-and-joe-gomez-send-liverpool-fans-into-raptures/) during his Charlton Athletic days.

The Reds landed the now 23-year-old [back in 2015 from Charlton](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/33210687) and the London-born centre-back has since made[121 appearances for the club](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/256178).

Adams, who like Gomez was born in London played [an astonishing 409](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tony-adams/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/28238)times for the Gunners, and he told [Stadium Astro](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmafOV3Kf94) his former club should’ve been in the frame for the Liverpool man:

> ”Where we’ve (Arsenal) done wrong, is we haven’t pinpointed areas of recruitment. I love (Matty) Cash at Villa for instance, he’s a Londoner. (Joe) Gomez is another Londoner! He’s a wonderful football, one of the best centre-backs in the country. Those kinds of kids.”

Since his arrival, Gomez has [established himself as an England regular](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/nationalmannschaft/spieler/256178/verein_id/3299) and had formed a[formidable partnership](https://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/one-goal-conceded-ten-games-virgil-van-dijk-and-joe-gomez-strike-extraordinary-central-defence-liverpool) alongside Virgil van Dijk prior to a[severe knee injury](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54919505)that brought a premature end to his 2020/21 campaign.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Signing Gomez as a talented teenager [for just £3.5m](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/jun/20/liverpool-joe-gomez-charlton-athletic)has proven to be a hugely successful piece of business from the Reds.

Now [valued at £36m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/marktwertverlauf/spieler/256178) and having played a[pivotal role in a trophy-laden period](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/erfolge/spieler/256178) in the club’s history, few transfers can claim to have provided better value for money.

Last season’s highest average Sofascore rating for a central defender was [accredited to van Dijk at 7.28](https://www.sofascore.com/tournament/football/england/premier-league/17)whilst [Gomez finished with 6.92](https://www.sofascore.com/player/joe-gomez/318927), no disgrace but a little way off competing with the best in the league.
