# Van Dijk signing not enough says Didi Hamann

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool cannot rely on Virgil van Dijk to resolve their defensive issues, according to Didi Hamann.

As reported by the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/didi-hamann-delivers-frank-assessment-14242995), Hamann says the capture of the Dutch defender still leaves them short at the back.

Speaking to Omnisport, the former Reds midfielder said:

> I think van Dijk will improve them, I think he brings pace and a physical presence to the team but I think they lack a holding midfielder. I think they’ve lacked that holding midfielder for a while now so unless they bring in someone who really protects the back four.
>
> I think van Dijk will improve them but not as much as I think they need to be improved to really challenge for titles on a consistent basis.

Van Dijk became the world’s most expensive defender when he joined from Southampton during the January transfer window.

He enjoyed the debut to remember when he scored against Everton in the FA Cup but started Liverpool’s Premier League meeting against Huddersfield on the bench.

The former Southampton man is expected to start against Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

Since the game against Everton, Liverpool have conceded seven goals in four games in all competitions.

The Reds have not kept back-to-back clean sheets in the Premier League since the middle of December.
