# Viral thread unpicks Liverpool transfer spending

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/06/virals-naby-keita-embroiled-in-international-controversy/) have become almost as synonymous with their frugality in the transfer window as their on-field success in recent years.

Despite a seemingly hands-off approach to the transfer window, the Reds continue to succeed under [Jurgen Klopp](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/04/don-hutchison-adamant-a-transfer-strategy-will-be-in-place-at-liverpool/) where it matters.

Although last season a refusal to replace Dejan Lovren threatened to completely derail the side, a [late unbeaten run](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2876501-liverpool-qualify-for-2020-21-champions-league-with-1-0-win-over-norwich) saw the bare minimum of UEFA Champions League qualification achieved.

Following yet another quiet [transfer window](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12312527/transfer-news-summer-transfer-window-2021-premier-league-ins-and-outs) whilst those around splashed the cash, Twitter account [Swiss Ramble](https://twitter.com/SwissRamble/status/1434755852645376000) has attempted to explain the finances and expenditure at Anfield with an informative thread.

> This summer [#LFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/LFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) only spent £36m on RB Leipzig defender Ibrahim Konaté, by far the lowest of the Big Six. Four clubs splashed out more than £100m:[#AFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/AFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) £149m, [#MUFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/MUFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) £126m, [#MCFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/MCFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) £115m and [#CFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/CFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) £108m. On a net basis, [#LFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/LFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) £11m was second smallest, as [#CFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/CFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) made £110m sales. Looking deep into the model imparted by ownership group FSG, the thread goes onto compare the spending at Liverpool with that of [Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) rivals as well as the other major players around Europe.

## READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Unsurprisingly the club comes out of almost each and every comparison having [spent the least](https://www.90min.com/posts/european-clubs-biggest-net-spend-rankedpsg-manchester-united-city-barcelona) when compared to similar-sized rivals.

Despite moving into the top five of the [Deloitte Money League](https://www2.deloitte.com/uk/en/pages/sports-business-group/articles/deloitte-football-money-league.html) in terms of revenue, Liverpool will eventually [m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/transfers/verein/31)ake a profit on their summer business once all fees are paid.

Whether this summer’s frugality was down to an ownership decision on the back of the pandemic, or Klopp’s [genuine](https://www.goal.com/en/news/we-dont-want-more-players-klopp-insists-he-is-happy-with/l9y7xve0a0351bmciokscfu8u)belief that the squad is sufficient remains to be seen.

But one thing is for sure, is that a wholesale change is coming as [key members of the squad](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/kader/verein/31) reach the end of what could be considered their prime.

How the club acts over the next two windows will be crucial.
