# Virals: Blow for Liverpool as Lorenzo Pellegrini to open contract talks

Reported [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/17/england-starlet-jude-bellingham-picks-steven-gerrard-as-number-one/) target [Lorenzo Pellegrini](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/11/virals-liverpool-face-competition-for-lorenzo-pellegrini/) is believed to be set to meet with AS Roma officials in order to renew his contract in the Italian capital.

This comes after [interest](https://twitter.com/LivEchoLFC/status/1403021195507912705) from the Reds and Barcelona became apparent in recent weeks – with a [£25.6million release clause](https://www.football365.com/news/liverpool-prepare-bid-release-clause-pellegrini-roma-transfer) making the potential move all the more enticing.

However, according to a fresh report from [Il Corriere dello Sport](https://www.corrieredellosport.it/), as cited by [Football Transfers](https://twitter.com/Transferzone00/status/1405521845453869063) on Twitter, the two parties are now looking to agree a new deal.

The report claims that the 24-year-old is ‘flattered’ by the interest but may opt to stay in Roma and work under [new manager Jose Mourinho](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11861/12296636/jose-mourinho-appointed-roma-head-coach-for-next-season).

Unsurprisingly any new deal would forgo any release clause in the same region – making the likelihood of any deal this summer for the [17-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lorenzo-pellegrini/nationalmannschaft/spieler/286297/verein_id/3376) star difficult.

Recently [withdrawing from the Italy squad](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9672029/Italy-ask-UEFA-permission-replace-Romas-Lorenzo-Pellegrini-Gaetano-Castrovilli.html) with a muscle injury, Pellegrini enjoyed a breakthrough 2020/21 campaign at the Stadio Olimpico – making [47 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lorenzo-pellegrini/leistungsdaten/spieler/286297), scoring 11 goals and making nine assists.

Valued at £36million and under contract currently until 2022 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lorenzo-pellegrini/marktwertverlauf/spieler/286297)), signing the Italian midfielder for the existing release clause would have been brilliant business from the Reds.

Billed as a potential Gini Wijnaldum replacement, the deal would’ve left sufficient funds to further strengthen other areas of the [squad](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) whilst filling a huge void.

Whilst Liverpool will no doubt continue to monitor the contract talks and swoop if plausible, the possibility of an extension is a blow to Jurgen Klopp’s plans.
