# Virals: Championship club ‘keeping tabs’ on Liverpool duo

Sheffield United are reportedly ‘keeping tabs’ on [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/01/24/virals-liverpool-monitoring-real-madrid-starlet-eduardo-camavinga/) duo [Nat Phillips](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/01/18/virals-psv-have-made-an-approach-for-liverpool-defender-nat-phillips/) and Rhys Williams.

The unlikely heroes of the 2020/21 campaign as the central defenders paired up to [guide the Reds to a 10 game unbeaten run](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/434196-nat-phillips-and-rhys-williams-have-created-proper-careers-now) and a third-place Premier League finish.

Williams was recently recalled from a [stuttering loan spell at Swansea City](https://www.sofascore.com/player/williams-rhys/902091) whilst Phillips is expected to leave the club having remained at Anfield as a patient fifth choice.

According to a report from the [Sheffield Star](https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/sheffield-united-blades-hope-liverpool-connections-could-help-end-their-search-for-a-centre-half-3539949), as cited by [The Lower Tiers](https://twitter.com/LowerTiers) on Twitter, the Blades are keen on utilising a strong relationship with Liverpool.

The report claims that ‘connections’ [between the two clubs](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54393687) may ‘pave the way’ for either the 20-year-old Williams or the 24-year-old Phillips to make the switch to Bramall Lane.

One of those connections was the season-long loan move of Ben Davies to [mid-table](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/championship/table) playoff chasers.

So far this season the 26-year-old has made [14 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-davies/leistungsdaten/spieler/257097) for Paul Heckingbottom’s side.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Given the [strength in depth](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) now in situ, allowing either centre-back to leave the club this month would be a wholly acceptable decision.

Whilst it’s unlikely Jurgen Klopp would sanction exits for both, perhaps the permanent departure of the [£7.2million valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/marktwertverlauf/spieler/371814) Phillips would be most beneficial.

Having [featured and thrived](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/371814) in the Premier League and Champions League, if Sheffield United could pull that deal off then it would have to be considered a major coup.
