# Virals: Chelsea set to sign heavily linked Liverpool target Saul Niguez

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/31/virals-liverpool-in-talks-with-two-clubs-over-sheyi-ojo-loan-deal/) have remained inactive this month despite those around strengthening their ranks.

Following the [departure of Gini Wijnaldum](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/gini-wijnaldum-liverpool-leaving-breaking-20660596) early in the summer, the Reds were expected to sign at least one central midfielder to replace the Dutchman.

Perhaps the [strongest link](https://as.com/futbol/2021/03/13/primera/1615672753_600535.html) was with a move for Atletico Madrid star, [Saul Niguez](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/24/virals-liverpool-target-saul-niguez-offered-to-epl-rivals-on-loan/).

However, as the days went by a move from Anfield looked [increasingly unlikely](https://as.com/futbol/2021/08/20/primera/1629454989_134929.html) as Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United began to circle.

Now it seems as though Chelsea have won the battle as reputable journalist [Fabrizio Romano](mailto:@FabrizioRomano) confirmed on Twitter that the deal is all but sealed.

The 26-year-old has earned [19 senior caps](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/nationalmannschaft/spieler/148928/verein_id/3375) for Spain and looked to be the ideal candidate to replace Wijnaldum in the Liverpool squad.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Perhaps the final indignity in what has been an immensely [disappointing transfer window](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/transfers/verein/31) in many ways.

Although [multiple key contract renewals](https://talksport.com/football/921088/fabinho-liverpool-contracts-salah-van-dijk-alisson-robertson/) have been successfully negotiated this summer, it’s hard not to feel an addition or two would’ve been a huge bonus to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Whilst wholesale changes went necessarily the order of the day, tweaks to the [squad](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) players this summer followed by major changes next should’ve been the modus operandi.
