# Virals: Defender Nat Phillips ‘under consideration’ at Southampton

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/20/virals-paris-saint-germain-fire-sale-links-julian-draxler-to-liverpool/) central defender [Nat Phillips](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/09/west-ham-nat-phillips-deal/) has reportedly remained ‘under consideration’ at Southampton this summer.

The 24-year-old was linked with a move to the South Coast earlier in the window and could still [replace Jannik Vestergaard](https://www.lcfc.com/news/2213716/leicester-city-sign-defender-jannik-vestergaard) after the giant Dane joined Leicester City.

Phillips [rose to prominence](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/12266479/nat-phillips-unlikely-rise-to-liverpool-cult-hero-before-real-madrid-test) last season amidst adversity and the Reds are believed to be reluctant to allow the centre-back to leave on the cheap.

According to a report from [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2774607/2021/08/17/southamptons-centre-back-search-tosin-interest-while-phillips-could-re-emerge-as-a-target/), as cited by [SaintsExtra](https://twitter.com/SaintsExtra/status/1427900802614583297) on Twitter, Southampton would be keen on a loan move for the Bolton-born ace.

The report claims that Liverpool would demand a fee in the region of £12-15million to sell the [former Stuttgart loanee](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/transfers/spieler/371814).

Last season Phillips made [17 Premier League appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/371814) – earning an average [Sofascore rating of 7.19](https://www.sofascore.com/player/nathaniel-phillips/920393) in the process.

Valued at £7.2million and under contract until 2023 at Anfield ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/marktwertverlauf/spieler/371814)), allowing the no-nonsense defender to leave on loan with a view to a future fee would be beneficial to the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp [currently has](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate at his disposal, making any route back into the first-team frame almost impossible to see.

Described as a [‘monster’](https://talksport.com/football/782338/messi-jurgen-klopp-nathaniel-philips-liverpool-west-ham/) by Klopp last term, Phillips has proven to be ready for top-flight action and a role as the fifth choice on Merseyside may no longer satisfy the ace’s ambitions.

Furthermore, with a likely loan fee in place and an overinflated squad, Liverpool could use the money and space towards possible incomings.
