# Virals: EPL club ‘ask about’ Liverpool defender Nat Phillips

Newcastle United have reportedly ‘asked about’ the possible signing of [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/01/26/virals-liverpool-offer-strong-competition-for-schalke-ace-malick-thiaw/) central defender [Nat Phillips](https://readliverpoolfc.com/?s=Nat+Phillips).

It’s widely anticipated that the 24-year-old will be the [subject of interest](https://www.google.com/search?q=nat+phillips+interest&rlz=1C1CHBF_en-GBGB885GB885&oq=nat+phillips+interest&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i60l2j69i61.3030j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8) as the January transfer window enters the last few days.

Having stepped in to [rescue the Reds’](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/may/19/burnley-liverpool-premier-league-match-report) in 2020/21, Phillips has returned to a watching brief for much of this campaign.

According to a report from the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10438381/Sevilla-tell-Newcastle-pay-40m-land-defender-Diego-Carlos.html), as cited by [Matt Thielen](https://twitter.com/MattThielen/status/1486008438375264270) on Twitter, relegation-threatened Newcastle could make a late swoop for the centre-back.

The report claims that the North East outfit could turn to Phillips should their [pursuit of Sevilla ace Diego Carlos](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/12524518/diego-carlos-newcastle-will-have-to-stump-up-at-least-37-9m-to-sign-sevilla-defender) fail.

Eddie Howe’s side will hope to agree on a ‘loan deal with an obligation to buy’ the Englishman if [relegation](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) can be avoided.

This season Phillips has made just [four appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/leistungsdaten/spieler/371814) across all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Valued at £7.2million and under contract at Anfield until 2025 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/marktwertverlauf/spieler/371814)), Liverpool are certainly in no rush to sell their man.

However, given the likelihood of little to no [first-team action](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/match/2021-22/men/fixtures-and-results) in the second half of the campaign, the club would be wise to accept bids of anything around the £15million asking price.

Already [experienced](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/371814) in the Premier League and indeed UEFA Champions League, Newcastle could do much worse than shelling out for the Bolton-born ace.
