# Virals: Fabrizio Romano claims target Saul Niguez ‘could leave’ this summer

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/04/virals-liverpool-winger-harry-wilson-a-target-for-swansea-city/) have been heavily linked with Atletico Madrid midfielder [Saul Niguez](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/02/virals-liverpool-target-saul-niguez-available-for-around-e40-50m/) this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen the Anfield ranks.

Following the departure of Gini Wijnaldum at the start of the summer, the Reds have been [credited with an interest](https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/5-midfielders-liverpool-could-sign-to-replace-gini-wijnaldum) in a wide range of midfield replacement options – including the Spaniard.

Currently a one-club man and having played a leading role as Diego Simeone’s side [lifted the La Liga title](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/atletico-real-madrid-la-liga-title-suarez-b1852156.html), it would come as a surprise were the 26-year-old be allowed to leave.

However, according to reputable Italian journalist [Fabrizio Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano), as cited by [Football Transfers](https://twitter.com/Transferzone00/status/1411644041389690881) on Twitter, a move could be on the horizon.

A further report from the [Daily Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/chelsea-transfer-news-rumours-gossip-24453571.amp) has credited Liverpool with a furhter interest whilst claiming Chelsea have already made a move for the ace.

Spanish outlet [AS](https://as.com/) have reported that Atletico will demand €40million (£34.2million) for the [19-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/nationalmannschaft/spieler/148928/verein_id/3375) midfielder.

During 2020/21, Saul made [41 apperances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/148928) across all competitions, scoring twice and adding one assist.

Valued at £36million and under contract at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2026 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/marktwertverlauf/spieler/148928)), the mooted asking price would represent outstnading value for the Reds.

Capable of playing across a [variety](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/148928) of midfield positions, as well as occasionally dropping into a central defensive role, the experienced Spaniard has made [374 senior appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/148928) in Spain.

Despite operating in a different role as his career has advanced, Saul was the [top goalscorer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/erfolge/spieler/148928) at the European Under 21 Championships back in 2017.

In terms of a replacement for Wijnaldum, this deal would implement a [slight alteration](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/112161/Show/Sa%C3%BAl-%C3%91%C3%ADguez) in the midfield, but would certainly not diminish the quality.
