# Virals: Key Liverpool duo continue on the road to recovery

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/04/virals-tweet-highlights-dejan-lovren-four-year-success-story/) duo Virgil van Dijk and [Joe Gomez](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/16/virals-joe-gomez-steps-up-rehab-from-season-ending-knee-injury/) have today been [pictured](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/433002-gallery-virgil-van-dijk-and-joe-gomez-continue-fitness-rehab) continuing their individual returns from respective knee injuries.

The central defenders looked to be going through light exercises outside at the Reds’ [state of the art AXA Training Centre](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/training-ground) in Kirkby.

Both men carried out ball work as they continue to recover from [season-ending issues](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-joe-gomez-injury-update-20343517) suffered prior to Christmas.

Unsurprisingly, the images were quick to appear on Twitter, via [The Anfield Talk](https://twitter.com/TheAnfieldTalk/status/1389569248687710209), as Kopites eagerly anticipate the comeback.

Jurgen Klopp has sorely missed the defensive duo, who were [so integral](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/joe-gomez-paid-ultimate-virgil-18030669) to Liverpool’s consecutive UEFA Champions League and Premier League successes.

The Van Dijk and Gomez partnership have been previously [hailed as ‘magnificent’](https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007t9yb) by Arsenal legend Martin Keown.

In their absence, the Reds have struggled to nail down a stable partnership, central midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho [both operating as makeshift centre-backs](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/liverpool-henderson-fabinho-centre-back-23430783) on occasion.

This will bring a smile to even the most pessimistic Liverpool fan.

Too often the tired cliche of a returning injured player being [‘like a new signing’](https://www.eurosport.co.uk/football/premier-league/2019-2020/just-like-a-new-signing-why-a-tired-cliche-will-be-pivotal-for-liverpool-this-season_sto7399654/story.shtml) has been trawled out.

However, on this occasion, welcoming back Gomez, Van Dijk and Joel Matip in pre-season will truly be a revolutionary shift in the Anfield playing [squad](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team).
