# Virals: James Pearce claims Liverpool are set to persevere with Ben Davies

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/21/virals-boost-for-liverpool-in-sensational-kylian-mbappe-pursuit/) signed [Ben Davies](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/02/26/ben-davies-tipped-for-liverpool-start-sheffield-united-agbonlahor/) from Preston North End during a chaotic transfer deadline day scramble to bolster their defensive ranks.

Arriving on the same day as the Reds completed the [loan signing of Ozan Kabak](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/feb/01/liverpool-sign-ozan-kabak-and-ben-davies) from Schalke, Davies must’ve believed all his dreams had come true in making a move to the then Premier League champions.

However, despite the ongoing issues at centre-back including an [injury to Kabak](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/433412-jurgen-klopp-s-injury-update-on-kabak-milner-and-davies) – the 25-year-old still awaits his first outing as a Liverpool player.

Albeit struck with injury, the Barrow-born defender in the main has been fit and available for section – simply overlooked in favour of [Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/434196-nat-phillips-and-rhys-williams-have-created-proper-careers-now) by Jurgen Klopp.

This has understandably led to questions as to the defenders future beyond the end of this campaign, questions James Pearce has sought to answer for [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2599114/2021/05/20/klopp-loves-nat-phillips-and-the-kop-will-too/) this week, as cited by [Anfield Effect](https://twitter.com/AnfieldEffect/status/1395077508878458881) on Twitter.

Having previously been [heavily linked](https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/sport/19166346.jurgen-klopp-delivers-ben-davies-verdict-celtic-tipped-return-market-target/) with a move to Celtic, many might’ve expected Liverpool to sell for a profit this summer.

Prior to his arrival on Merseyside, Davies had played [19 times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-davies/leistungsdaten/spieler/257097) in the Championship – earning an average [Sofacore rating of 6.99](https://www.sofascore.com/player/ben-davies/309218) along the way.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Whilst it’s very Jurgen Klopp like to persist with a player, keeping the 6’1 ace beyond the [desperate situation](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/liverpools-defensive-crisis-klopp-has-no-idea-if-reds-will/jwe17r0ekcxm1fse0usc8d0jh) of this season would be a strange call.

All being well [Liverpool will have](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and perhaps Nat Phillips at least to choose from next term.

Seemingly [unwilling to trigger the £18million deal](https://metro.co.uk/2021/05/16/liverpool-make-decision-over-permanent-ozan-kabak-transfer-14591091/) to sign Kabak permanently, the Reds are instead some way down the line towards [signing Ibrahima Konate](https://talksport.com/football/876247/ibrahima-konate-liverpool-medical-rb-leipzig-transfer-news/) – another who would immediately jump ahead of Davies in the pecking order.

Both for club and player a summer sale would make the most sense – freeing up a squad space, wages and bringing in useful transfer funds whilst allowing Davies to continue a promising career.
