# Virals: James Pearce confirms ‘good deal’ as Liam Millar leaves

Young [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/07/virals-liverpool-make-contact-to-sign-piotr-zielinski/) striker [Liam Millar](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/27/virals-liverpool-youngster-liam-millar-close-to-permanent-departure/) has completed a transfer to Swiss Super League club Basel.

The Reds will receive £1.3 million for the 21-year-old and have also negotiated a 20 per cent future sell-on clause.

Millar leaves Merseyside after [signing from Fulham](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liam-millar/transfers/spieler/487417) as a fledgeling teenager back in 2016.

The move was confirmed in a report from [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/news/liverpool-transfers-liam-millar-basel/q6XVFdsw7xiC), as cited by [James Pearce](https://twitter.com/JamesPearceLFC/status/1412724037512577026) on Twitter.

The report also cites interest from Odense, New York Red Bulls, Blackpool and Charlton Athletic – where the Canadian [spent the second half of last season](https://www.cafc.co.uk/news/view/5ff4326d9234d/done-deal-canada-international-liam-millar-joins-on-loan-from-liverpool) on loan.

After scoring [three times and adding another six assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liam-millar/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/487417), the League One club were believed to be [keen on securing a return](https://the72.co.uk/239597/charlton-athletic-interested-in-re-signing-liam-millar-from-liverpool/) for the versatile attacker.

Born in Ontario, Millar has earned [11 caps](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liam-millar/nationalmannschaft/spieler/487417/verein_id/3510) at senior level for Canada, but only made [one senior appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liam-millar/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/487417) for the Reds.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

As Pearce rightly says, this is a smart move for all involved.

Despite [possessing strong attacking ability](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/391821/Show/Liam-Millar), it always seemed highly unlikely Millar would make the grade in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Whilst the fee isn’t the influx of money many, including Klopp himself, might’ve hoped for in order to [kickstart a spending spree](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-can-raise-80m-selling-20697081) at Anfield, it is a start.

Attention many now turn to attempting to [find new permanent clubs](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-sell-11-players-millions-20264292) for the likes of Harry Wilson, Marko Grujic and Neco Williams.
