# Virals: Jonathan David ‘very high’ on Liverpool shortlist

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/02/virals-liverpool-in-the-mix-for-marco-asensio-capture/) have reportedly placed Lille striker [Jonathan David](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/09/21/james-pearce-confirms-liverpools-interest-in-jonathan-david/) ‘very high’ on their list of transfer targets this summer.

The Reds hold the 21-year-old in high regard and could turn to the Canadian should the [French champions](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/may/23/european-roundup-lille-win-at-angers-to-seal-first-ligue-1-title-in-10-years) need to sell.

Signed from Gent last August for £27million ([GFFN](https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2020/official-lille-sign-jonathan-david-from-gent-for-a-reported-e30m/)), Liverpool’s admiration was confirmed by [James Pearce for The Athletic.](https://theathletic.com/2076510/2020/09/21/liverpool-defender-transfer-jota-thiago-oxlade-origi/?source=emp_shared_article)

According to TSN Sports reporter [Matthew Scianitti](https://twitter.com/TSNScianitti) on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/TSNScianitti/status/1422202798272401412), the Brooklyn-born ace remains on the radar at Liverpool.

Finances in France have perhaps been hit hardest following the Covid-19 pandemic due to a [collapsed broadcast deal](https://www.france24.com/en/sport/20210205-bleeding-cash-top-french-football-league-signs-stopgap-tv-deal-with-canal) – leaving Lille a [reported](https://www.cityam.com/french-footballs-financial-crisis-why-ligue-1s-e3bn-deal-with-mediapro-collapsed-and-what-it-means-for-the-premier-league/) €125million (£106.8million) in debt and in need of selling major assets.

With [15 goals in 16 outings](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jonathan-david/nationalmannschaft/spieler/533738/verein_id/3510) for Canada, David has impressed on the global stage and continued his development last season netting [13 league goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jonathan-david/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/533738/plus/0/saison/2020/wettbewerb/FR1/verein/1082) in 37 appearances.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Signing the star once [hailed as a ‘phenomenon’](https://www.nieuwsblad.be/cnt/dmf20200428_04937902?articlehash=F8BA53820626FFEA88DF412D0E975CEE2AB71F2ACCF6E2A1A0520D9B066EBC6F705D8E185584784EC979D96ACAF0056F018AFF73C0C7F8DB992174DA4D706B04) by former Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck would bolster the attacking options at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal.

Another year older and having [made the step up](https://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/) in European domestic terms, the striker is likely to be much improved for spending a year in France.

Capable of playing as a recognised centre-forward, second striker and as a wide man, David would offer [maximum versatility](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jonathan-david/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/533738) to the Anfield ranks.

Valued at £31.5million ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jonathan-david/marktwertverlauf/spieler/533738)), it’s expected Liverpool may have to offer a small profit on the French club’s expenditure in order to land the Canadian.

As a replacement for the potentially outgoing Divock Origi, at 21 and with [bags of potential](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/383855/Show/Jonathan-David), this is a no-brainer for the Reds.
