# Virals: Journalist claims injury ‘cancelled’ Renato Sanches to Liverpool move

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/05/virals-liverpool-in-three-way-fight-for-ac-milan-star-franck-kessie/) were heavily linked with a move for Lille midfielder [Renato Sanches](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/11/virals-liverpool-most-likely-destination-for-renato-sanches-this-summer/) throughout the summer transfer window.

The Reds were expected to sign at least one central midfielder to replace Gini Wijnaldum following the Dutchman’s [move](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57400206) to Paris Saint Germain.

Despite [numerous](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/every-player-liverpool-transfer-rumours-21433837) possible targets, Jurgen Klopp opted to stick with the options already at his disposal at Anfield.

That may have all changed were it not for an [injury suffered](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/manchester-city-liverpool-renato-sanches-harry-kane-daniel-levy-b1905082.html) by Sanches midway through the transfer window, however.

According to Portuguese journalist [Pedro Almeida](https://twitter.com/pedrogva6), the 23-year-old ace was heading for Merseyside prior to a knee issue.

Despite the injury, the [30-cap Portugal ace](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renato-sanches/nationalmannschaft/spieler/258027/verein_id/3300) came close to joining Wolves on loan during deadline day before the French club seemingly pulled out.

Sanches played [90 minutes](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renato-sanches/leistungsdaten/spieler/258027) on the opening day of the Ligue 1 season before missing the next three matches with an injury picked up in training.

Once a loanee at Swansea City, the ex-Bayern Munich man catapulted himself back into the public domain with a run of [stellar displays](https://www.sofascore.com/player/renato-sanches/318967) during the European Championships.

## READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Valued at £27million and under contract until 2023 in France ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renato-sanches/marktwertverlauf/spieler/258027)), Liverpool would’ve needed to shell out for the midfielder’s services.

Unfortunately for Sanches, this summer might’ve been an opportunity missed to join Klopp’s [squad](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team).

Now holding a rather [wretched](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renato-sanches/verletzungen/spieler/258027) injury record, it seems unlikely the Reds will return when other targets such as Franck Kessie are made available.
