# Virals: Journalist claims Renato Sanches to Liverpool is ‘almost done’

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/03/virals-twitter-frenzy-as-virgil-van-dijk-counts-down-to-pre-season/) could be close to finalising a deal for Lille central midfielder [Renato Sanches](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/25/liverpool-sanches-deal-expensive/).

Jurgen Klopp is believed to be on the lookout for midfield reinforcements after [Gini Wijnaldum left the club](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/why-gini-wijnaldum-leaving-liverpool-20781054) as a free agent last month.

Sanches has previously been [linked with an Anfield switch](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/renato-sanches-liverpool-transfer-rumours-20936258) and impressed during Euro 2020 after a Ligue 1 title-winning campaign in 2020/21.

Now, just hours after a report from French newspaper [*L’Equipe*](https://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Article/Le-mercato-de-lille-avance-doucement-mais-surement/1267700) claimed the Reds were ‘very interested’ in the Portuguese star, journalist [Pedro Almeida](https://twitter.com/pedrogva6/status/1411372892349161472) has claimed that a deal could be imminent on Twitter.

The 23-year-old earned an impressive average [Sofascore rating of 7.00](https://www.sofascore.com/player/renato-sanches/318967) in four appearances against tough opposition before being eliminated from the European Championships by Belgium.

That form followed [one goal and three assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renato-sanches/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/258027) in 23 outings as Lille lifted the French top-flight trophy against the odds.

Once [described](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renato-sanches/nationalmannschaft/spieler/258027/verein_id/3300) as ‘irresistible’ by Mats Hummels, the [30-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renato-sanches/nationalmannschaft/spieler/258027/verein_id/3300) Portugal man has already enjoyed a [rollercoaster short career](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renato-sanches/transfers/spieler/258027) including spells with Bayern Munich, Benfica and an ill-fated stint on loan at Swansea.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Valued at £27million and under contract in France until 2023 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renato-sanches/marktwertverlauf/spieler/258027)), given the financial difficulties, the mooted fee is easy to justify.

Previously the deal was [reportedly](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-renato-sanches-transfer-truth-20893116) regarded as ‘too expesive’, with the club looking to utilise squad options instead of a new face.

However, that stance could have changed in the short term as squad players [begin to move on](https://theathletic.com/news/liverpool-liam-millar-basel-transfer/j8NLP9fRbUvf) from Merseyside.

Boasting an [abundance of attributes](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/299450/Show/Renato-Sanches) that make Sanches the ideal Wijnaldum replacement, the Portuguese star does hold a rather worrying [injury record](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renato-sanches/verletzungen/spieler/258027) that would bring into question his durability.

Fitness concerns aside if the [form shown at Euro 2020](https://twitter.com/henrywinter/status/1407808316730978314) is anything to go by then the Lille man would be the perfect summer arrival.
