# Virals: Journalist claims Xherdan Shaqiri is ‘very close’ to Liverpool exit

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/11/virals-liverpool-most-likely-destination-for-renato-sanches-this-summer/) winger [Xherdan Shaqiri](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/10/lyon-xherdan-shaqiri-contact/) could be on the verge of sealing a departure from Merseyside this summer.

The 29-year-old has seemingly been [angling for a move](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/liverpool-star-pleads-exit-european-rivals-revive-interest) since the European Championships as the Swiss ace goes in search of regular game time.

Shaqiri was in [superb form during Euro 2020](https://www.sofascore.com/player/xherdan-shaqiri/65953) despite failing to make a constant impact on Jurgen Klopp’s side last term.

According to Sky Sports journalist [Gianluca Di Marzio](https://twitter.com/DiMarzio) on Twitter, the diminutive forward is ‘very close’ to a move to French Ligue 1 club Lyon.

A further report from reputable French newspaper [L’Equipe](https://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Actualites/Transferts-xherdan-shaqiri-liverpool-est-d-accord-avec-l-ol/1277851) claimed the [96-cap](https://readliverpoolfc.com/L%E2%80%99Equipe) international stalwart has already agreed to personal terms in France.

Last season Shaqiri made 22 appearances across all competitions for the Reds, [scoring once and adding four assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/xherdan-shaqiri/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/86792) along the way.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

It seemed as though something was in the pipeline when Shaqiri, along with Nat Phillips, was [left out of both games](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/liverpool-shaqiri-phillips-close-summer-switch-klopp-exit-hint) against Spanish opposition earlier in the week.

Selling the Swiss ace for just £6.7million may seem rather on the cheap side, especially considering the [£13milllion expenditure](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44818207) and Liverpool’s recent penchant for extract every penny from a deal.

However, as the transfer window heads towards a close, if any [new arrivals](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-sell-11-players-millions-20264292) are going to be forthcoming, additional funds, squad space and wages will be required

Shaqiri was taking up a [crucial non-homegrown space](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/liverpool-squad-homegrown-transfers-bowen-24624952) in the Anfield ranks and could now be replaced by a player ready to make a greater impression.

Many Kopites will no doubt wish the star well on his next adventure, thank him for the [special moments](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/349628-xherdan-shaqiri-barcelona-reaction) at Anfield and pray for an outsourced replacement.
