# Virals: Jurgen Klopp ends Philippe Coutinho’s ‘dream’ return hopes

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/08/virals-liverpool-in-contact-with-lazio-over-sergej-milinkovic-savic/) manager Jurgen Klopp is believed to have put pay to any hopes [Philippe Coutinho](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/05/virals-barcelona-willing-to-accept-20m-for-philippe-coutinho/) had of making a ‘dream’ return to Anfield.

Coutinho [left the Reds](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42580173) in January 2018 after [handing in a transfer request](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/10983425/liverpool-reject-philippe-coutinhos-transfer-request-after-barcelona-bids#:~:text=Liverpool%20reject%20Philippe%20Coutinho's%20transfer%20request%20after%20Barcelona%20bids,-By%20Sky%20Sports&text=Liverpool%20have%20rejected%20Philippe%20Coutinho's%20transfer%20request%20after%20he%20told,to%20Barcelona%2C%20Sky%20sources%20understand.) on Merseyside and seemingly forcing through a move.

The Brazilian is out of favour at Barcelona and could be on the move once again this summer having [failed to make the desired impact](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/80444) at the Camp Nou.

According to a report from Spanish outlet [Sport](https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/barca/coutinho-regresara-barcelona-buenas-noticias-11892998), as cited by [Liverpool FC News](https://twitter.com/LivEchoLFC/status/1413134919052587009) on Twitter, the 29-year-old had ambitions of making a sensational comeback this summer.

The report claims that the attacking midfielder’s ‘initial dream’ was a return to Liverpool, however, that was kiboshed by Klopp, who is said to have ‘closed the door’ on the [63-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/nationalmannschaft/spieler/80444/verein_id/3439) Brazil ace.

During an [injury-plagued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/verletzungen/spieler/80444) 2020/21, Coutinho made just [14 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/80444) across all competitions for Barca.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

The Catalan giants are likely to attempt to recoup some of the eye-watering £142million expenditure ([The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jan/06/philippe-coutinho-join-barcelona-142m-deal-liverpool)), as Ronaldo Koeman looks to bolster the squad options and resign Lionel Messi.

Currently valued at £27million ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/marktwertverlauf/spieler/80444)), bringing the Brazilian back to Anfield would no doubt be an [inexpensive](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/barcelona-philippe-coutinho-transfer-liverpool-23715516) move given the circumstances.

However, it’s those circumstances that make the move so unlikely, with Klopp right to be reticent about allowing a player to return having pushed for a departure in [inauspicious](https://www.givemesport.com/1231207-how-liverpool-reacted-when-philippe-coutinhos-back-scan-came-back-all-clear) circumstances.

Furthermore, the side has developed since the Brazilian’s starring days on Merseyside, operating [without a number 10 in situ](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/philippe-coutinho-overshadowed-one-jurgen-18788525) since with great success.
