# Virals: Liverpool ‘begin talks’ with Southampton over Takumi Minamino

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/09/otd-liverpool-signed-jordan-henderson-from-sunderland/) have reportedly held talks with Southampton regarding the future of Japanese forward [Takumi Minamino](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/04/virals-paul-gorst-believes-takumi-minamino-will-leave-this-summer/).

The 26-year-old spent the second half of the season on loan at the south coast club and faces [major uncertainty](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-transfer-news-klopp-minamino-24270629) over his Anfield future.

Signed for his then release fee of £7.25million ([Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11890345/takumi-minamino-liverpool-sign-red-bull-salzburg-midfielder)) from Red Bull Salzburg after impressing against the Reds in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stages – Jurgen Klopp looked to have added a bargain to the squad.

However, having struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League, the versatile attacker was [allowed to leave](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/424573-takumi-minamino-joins-southampton-on-loan) on deadline day in February.

Now as the summer transfer window opens, the two clubs have held discussions over the next move according to the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9663469/Southampton-begin-talks-Liverpool-bringing-loan-star-Takumi-Minamino-St-Marys.html), as cited by [Watch LFC](https://twitter.com/Watch_LFC/status/1402266484882264074) on Twitter.

After making a bright start with the Saints – Minamino ended the season with just [27 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/takumi-minamino/leistungsdaten/spieler/165793) across all competitions – only [nine](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/takumi-minamino/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/165793/saison/2020/wettbewerb/GB1) of which came for the Reds in the league.

[Described](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/386231-joe-gomez-hails-takumi-minamino) upon signing as an ‘unbelievable addition’ by Joe Gomez, the [28-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/takumi-minamino/nationalmannschaft/spieler/165793/verein_id/3435) Japan ace scored twice whilst away on loan, including one [smartly taken finish](https://www.sportbible.com/football/football-news-reactions-goals-takumi-minamino-sits-cesar-azpilicueta-down-for-stunning-goal-20210220) against Chelsea.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Klopp has previously [claimed](https://www.goal.com/en/news/klopp-hints-at-liverpool-future-for-minamino-as-southampton/1nvywcm8wv17e1gpc2bhg6uv9c) there remains a role within his plans for Minamino – something the current noises from out of the club replicate.

But, were a permanent offer to materialise that represents a profit on the investment in the [£10.8million valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/takumi-minamino/nationalmannschaft/spieler/165793/verein_id/3435) star – surely the Reds would be better off cutting their losses and using the money elsewhere.

Albeit clearly a player with [talent](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/262838/Show/Takumi-Minamino), the move to Merseyside [didn’t work](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/takumi-minamino-liverpool-tactics-klopp-19439348) out as planned and at 26, another loan switch would make no sense from a Liverpool perspective.
