# Virals: Liverpool ‘closely following’ Barcelona star Ronald Araujo

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/11/29/virals-liverpool-defensive-duo-considered-for-january-departures/) are reportedly ‘behind’ the signature of Barcelona central defender Ronald Araujo.

The 22-year-old has become a [mainstay in the first-team](https://www.sofascore.com/player/ronald-araujo/925097) at the Camp Nou recently and has attracted the attention of the Reds.

That’s according to a report from [ESPN correspondents Moisés Llorens and Samuel Marsden](https://espndeportes.espn.com/futbol/espana/nota/_/id/9572780/renovacion-araujo-barcelona-complicar-presion-premier-league), as cited by [LFC Transfer Room](https://twitter.com/LFCTransferRoom) on Twitter.

> 🇪🇸🥇 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗜𝗡: The renewal of Ronald Araujo will be very complicated, his current deal with Barca ends in 2023. Liverpool are behind his signature, and the Reds have even sent representatives multiple times to get close to the player.

The report claims that the Anfield club are ‘closely following’ the [five-times capped](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ronald-araujo/nationalmannschaft/spieler/480267/verein_id/3449) Uruguay ace.

Recently praised for possessing [‘excellent character’](https://heavy.com/sports/fc-barcelona/xavi-hurls-praise-at-defender/) by new manager Xavi, so far this season Araujo has [scored once in 14 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ronald-araujo/leistungsdaten/spieler/480267) for the Catalan giants.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Valued at £22.5million and under contract in Spain until 2023 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ronald-araujo/marktwertverlauf/spieler/480267)), it’s clear to see why Barca are keen to secure the future of the Uruguayan star.

Predominantly a centre-back, Araujo can also [operate at right-back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ronald-araujo/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/480267) and as a defensive midfield.

Although such versatility would be of use to Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp, the [squad](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) is currently blessed with options at the heart of the defence and it would seem certain at least one would have to make way for this move to happen.

That could well be Joe Gomez as the Englishman [finds himself down the pecking order](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-fans-send-steven-gerrard-22300324) following a wretched run of injuries.
