# Virals: Liverpool defender Nat Phillips signs new four-year contract

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/31/jamie-carragher-unperturbed-by-transfer-inactivity-at-liverpool/) central defender [Nat Phillips](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/31/nat-phillips-departure-deadline-day/) has signed a new four-year deal to stay at the club until 2025.

The 24-year-old had previously been [tipped to leave Anfield](https://www.football365.com/news/liverpool-defender-nat-phillips-likely-leave-premier-league-interest) during the summer transfer window following a rapid rise to prominence last season.

Phillips was called upon to resurrect the Reds’ campaign on the back of a host of [injuries](https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/liverpool-injury-news-latest-list-alisson-thiago-alexander-arnold-robertson-henderson-780156) in the defensive department.

The renewal was confirmed by the [club’s official website](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/442317-nathaniel-phillips-signs-new-long-term-liverpool-deal) and [Twitter](https://twitter.com/LFC/status/1432734638389272584) on Tuesday evening as many awaited potential news of a departure.

The no-nonsense centre-back admitted he was ‘excited’ to extend a [five-year spell](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/transfers/spieler/371814) on Merseyside.

Formerly a Bolton youth product, Phillips spent a [season on loan at VfB Stuttgart](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/371814) in Germany prior to excelling at the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s defence last term.

Described as a [‘monster’](https://talksport.com/football/782338/messi-jurgen-klopp-nathaniel-philips-liverpool-west-ham/) by Klopp, there will certainly be delight among many that the ace is staying at Anfield.

Currently enjoying a career-high market value at £7.2million ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/marktwertverlauf/spieler/371814)), the club would likely have been tempted to cash in on their defensive colossus.

Phillips looks set to spend the season as the fifth choice centre-back behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate.

Perhaps given the injury woes last term following the [departure of Dejan Lovren](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/27/dejan-lovren-leaves-liverpool-zenit-jurgen-klopp-and-mo-salah-pay-tribute#:~:text=Dejan%20Lovren%20leaves%20Liverpool%20to%20join%20Zenit%20as%20Klopp%20and%20Salah%20pay%20tribute,-This%20article%20is&text=The%20Liverpool%20manager%2C%20J%C3%BCrgen%20Klopp,10.9m%20move%20to%20Zenit.&text=Lovren%20has%20struggled%20with%20injuries,final%20year%20of%20his%20contract.), the club were unwilling to leave themselves short in the department once again.

Meanwhile, Phillips’ partner for the most part, Rhys Williams, has also signed a new long-term deal whilst [confirming](https://twitter.com/LFC/status/1432750515537031169) a season long loan switch to Swansea City.
