# Virals: Liverpool defensive duo considered for January departures

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/11/28/paul-merson-full-of-praise-for-absolutely-brilliant-diogo-jota/) have been showing their Premier League title-winning credentials all over again in recent weeks and all things would appear positive at Anfield.

Still in the Carabao Cup and having [qualified as comfortable group winners](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11945/12459197/champions-league-state-of-play-who-has-qualified-from-group-stage-and-when-is-draw-for-knockout-rounds) in the UEFA Champions League, nigh on the entire squad has featured at some point already this season.

However, it would seem two defenders could be disillusioned with their [lack of game time](https://www.premierleague.com/clubs/10/Liverpool/squad) and a January departure could be on the cards.

According to reports from [The Sunday Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/), as cited by [LFC Transfer Room](https://twitter.com/LFCTransferRoom) on Twitter, Neco Williams and Joe Gomez could be targetted for a mid-season move.

Anfield legend and new Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard could attempt to offer Gomez an opportunity as the Englishman has [struggled](https://www.sofascore.com/player/joe-gomez/318927) on his return from injury.

So far this season the [11-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/nationalmannschaft/spieler/256178/verein_id/3299) England ace has made [seven appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/leistungsdaten/spieler/256178) across all competitions – including just 12 minutes of Premier League action.

Meanwhile, [17 times capped](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/neco-williams/leistungsdaten/spieler/503680) Wales star Williams has amassed [187 minutes](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/neco-williams/leistungsdaten/spieler/503680) of first-team action, providing two assists in the process.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Albeit recently [hit by a minor calf injury](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-injury-southampton-21730350), it had already seemed apparent Gomez was no longer the first-choice partner to Virgil van Dijk.

In fact, Ibrahima Konate had usurped the [£27million valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/marktwertverlauf/spieler/256178) man in the pecking order and it could be argued Nat Phillips’ exploits last term warrant a spot.

Having [harboured ambitions](https://www.thefa.com/news/2021/feb/02/joe-gomez-positively-england-podcast-20210202) of becoming a mainstay for the Reds and indeed England, Gomez won’t be satisfied with a bit-part role moving forwards.

For that reason perhaps a January loan move would be best for all parties in order to reinstall confidence and form in the [‘sensational’](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/385277-jurgen-klopp-praise-for-joe-gomez) one-time Jurgen Klopp favourite.

As for Williams, this could be a move that Liverpool sanction in the near future providing there is enough faith in [another talented youngster](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/academy/player/conor-bradley), Conor Bradley.
