# Virals: Liverpool eye Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz as midfield successor

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/03/09/rio-ferdinand-praises-world-class-liverpool-goalkeeper-alisson/) could reportedly make Aston Villa midfielder [Douglas Luiz](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/01/27/virals-liverpool-plotting-a-swoop-for-aston-villa-ace-douglas-luiz/) the long term successor to Fabinho.

The 23-year-old ace has been [superb](https://www.sofascore.com/player/douglas-luiz/867887) for the Midlands club this season and Steven Gerrard has set about further improving the Brazilian.

Now, a report from the [Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1576780/Liverpool-Arsenal-Steven-Gerrard-transfer-news-Fabinho-SNT), as cited by [Anfield Edition](https://twitter.com/AnfieldEdition/status/1501122550805508098) on Twitter has suggested that Jurgen Klopp could target Luiz to replace his compatriot.

The report claims that there is ‘plenty of interest’ in the [five-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/douglas-luiz/nationalmannschaft/spieler/447661/verein_id/53818) Brazil ace with Arsenal and Tottenham both interested.

Described as [‘underrated’](https://open.spotify.com/episode/0oexP9MXsAFIStMzhgvCqo) by Ian Wright, the combative midfielder has been catching the eye across the league.

So far this season Luiz has earned a [6.96 average Sofascore rating](https://www.sofascore.com/player/douglas-luiz/867887) from 22 Premier League outings. Slightly below Fabinho’s [7.00 score](https://www.sofascore.com/player/fabinho/243585) from 20 league appearances.

Still just 28, there is certainly no immediate need to consider replacing the man affectionately dubbed as the [‘lighthouse’](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/363315-fabinho-discusses-tactical-approach) for an unrivalled ability to spot danger.

However, valued at [£31.5million and in the final 18 months](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/douglas-luiz/marktwertverlauf/spieler/447661) of a deal at Villa Park, this summer window may present a golden opportunity to add Luiz to the Anfield ranks.

A weakness in Jurgen Klopp’s [ranks](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) has been the drop-off when Fabinho is unavailable.

Signing the [talented Brazilian](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) would solve that issue and ensure the ongoing succession plan has another piece.
