# Virals: Liverpool fans relish links to ‘perfect’ Roberto Firmino understudy

Liverpool have reportedly made an ‘official proposal’ to sign Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha.

The Reds are believed to be keen on the 22-year-old who [arrived at the Wanda Metropolitano](https://www.goal.com/en/news/atletico-madrid-sign-cunha-from-hertha-in-26m-deal/7uqyb7qtc4281xs8hiv8n8t4m) for €26million (£22million) in August 2021.

However, having [started just three times](https://www.sofascore.com/player/matheus-cunha/886363) in La Liga this term, the move hasn’t exactly worked out as planned.

Responding to a report from Spanish outlet [AS](https://as.com/futbol/2022/01/28/primera/1643371073_076347.html), as cited by [Anfield Edition](https://twitter.com/NixonOnFootball/status/1487053095532052486) on Twitter, Liverpool fans were in disbelief on a day that saw a move for Luis Diaz edge closer.

So far this season Cunha has [scored five times and provided three assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-cunha/leistungsdaten/spieler/517894) in 24 appearances across all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Signing the [£27million valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-cunha/marktwertverlauf/spieler/517894) Brazilian would certainly be a statement of intent from the Reds so late in the window.

Given the recency of the ace’s arrival in Madrid and [contract](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-cunha/profil/spieler/517894) until 2026, realistically this isn’t a deal that has legs for this month but could reemerge moving forwards.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will have an eye on a Roberto Firmino successor and Cunha [possesses many similar traits](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/362758/Show/Matheus-Cunha) to his fellow Samba star.

Perhaps one to revisit in the summer…
