# Virals: Liverpool hold ‘long-standing admiration’ in Saul Niguez

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/12/virals-host-of-liverpool-star-names-return-to-pre-season-training/) seem to be actively pursuing midfield reinforcements this summer as [Jurgen Klopp](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/09/liverpool-pre-season-starts/) and co begin pre-season in Austria.

The Reds are set to kickstart their 2021/22 preparations this week with a host of [star names returning](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/437636-photos-several-reds-arrive-in-austria-for-start-of-pre-season) to action.

One man that won’t be in situ is Gini Wijnaldum after the Dutchman [left the club as a free agent](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11820/12189637/georginio-wijnaldum-paris-saint-germain-sign-midfielder-on-free-transfer-from-liverpool) this summer.

That departure has led to a number of [midfielders linked](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-transfers-saul-niguez-davies-21022813) with a move to Anfield, the latest of which being Atletico Madrid ace Saul Niguez.

According to a report from the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/saul-niguez-liverpool-transfer-deal-21022522), as cited by [Anfield Watch](https://twitter.com/AnfieldWatch/status/1414505142603354114) on Twitter, the interest in the Spaniard is nothing new.

This comes as a fresh report from Spanish newspaper [Mundo Deportivo](https://www.mundodeportivo.com/) (via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/liverpool-made-offer-for-player-after-reds-entered-very-strongly-in-transfer-chase-negotiations-underway/)), claims that Liverpool have ‘entered very strongly’ into the race for the 26-year-old.

The same report also states that ‘negotiations are underway’ between the two clubs, whilst Barcelona also [hope to strike a deal](https://www.90min.com/posts/barcelona-transfer-news-antoine-griezmann-saul-niguez-atletico-madrid-swap-deal) involving Antoine Griezmann.

Capped on [19 occasions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/nationalmannschaft/spieler/148928/verein_id/3375) by Spain, Saul has been a [consistent performer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/148928) down the years in La Liga for Atletico.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Signing the [£36million valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/marktwertverlauf/spieler/148928) star this summer would be a huge coup for Klopp’s squad.

Despite an apparent [dip in form](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/148928/plus/0/saison/2020/wettbewerb/ES1/verein/13) last season, the Spaniard remains an elite performer and would offer incredible versatility to the Anfield ranks.

Capable of playing in a [variety of positions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-niguez/leistungsdaten/spieler/148928) in both an attacking and defensive role, Liverpool would replenish their midfield department no end with Saul’s arrival.
