# Virals: Liverpool interested in Sporting CP star Pedro Goncalves

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/10/31/virals-liverpool-make-leicester-city-star-harvey-barnes-their-top-target/) have once again been linked with a move for Sporting CP playmaker [Pedro Goncalves](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/20/virals-reported-liverpool-target-pedro-goncalves-nets-sublime-hat-trick/).

The Reds were initially [credited with an interest](https://www.record.pt/futebol/futebol-nacional/liga-bwin/sporting/detalhe/pote-nao-parte-jogador-e-para-manter?ref=Sporting_DestaquesPrincipais) in the 23-year-old during the summer transfer window and are believed to retain an admiration.

Despite recently [signing a new contract](https://www.abola.pt/Nnh/Noticias/Ver/911061) with the Portuguese giants, Liverpool remain in contention to bring the star to the Premier League.

That’s according to a report from [Record](https://www.record.pt/futebol/futebol-nacional/liga-bwin/sporting/detalhe/eis-o-senhor-80-milhoes-pote-passa-a-ter-a-clausula-mais-alta-no-sporting), as cited by [Total Football Center](https://twitter.com/totalfc_) on Twitter.

The report claims that the Reds would need to activate a new £67.5million release clause in order to land the [twice capped](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pedro-goncalves/nationalmannschaft/spieler/426620/verein_id/3300) Portugal ace.

So far this season, the man who is known simply as Pote, has [scored four times and provided one assist](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pedro-goncalves/leistungsdaten/spieler/426620) in 10 appearances across all competitions.

Described as [‘outstanding’](https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/under-23/20190225-playing-at-molineux-gives-under-23s-a-lift-says-edwards/) by Rob Edwards during his spell with Wolves, the 2020/21 Liga Nos top goalscorer has earned a [7.37 average Sofascore rating](https://www.sofascore.com/player/pedro-goncalves/895764) this term.

Signing additional attacking options could be a priority as soon as January when Jurgen Klopp looks set to [lose Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-salah-mane-afcon-breaking-21975322) to the African Cup of Nations for a prolonged period.

Despite being moved out to the wing this season, previously Pote has predominantly [operated from central attacking positions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pedro-goncalves/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/426620) and would offer excellent versatility to the Anfield squad.

Valued at £22.5million and under contract in Portugal until 2026 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pedro-goncalves/marktwertverlauf/spieler/426620)), Liverpool would have to go against their own principles to pay the mooted release clause in the winter.
